"Straight Ahead" is a track from the album "Una Mas" (1964) by Kenny Dorham. It's one one the first appereance of the legendary Tony Williams.
Here is the transcription of his comping on Herbie Hancock's solo and the "trades" section.
why you should learn this song:
- first approach to "broken-time" feel: notice that Tony's comping ideas aren't so different from "bop" drummers (Max Roach, Art Blakey, Kenny Clarke, etc.), but his "broken-time" feel on the ride cymbal make the comping sound "modern"
Try to play the comping while keeping the swing ride pattern and then allow your ride cymbal to follow the other limbs;
- to learn some comping ideas using the hi-hat as a "third hand";
- to learn some comping ideas in 3/4 over 4/4;
- rhythmic variety during his solo;
- use of linear phrases;
- use of rests to create a sense om mystery;
Better than the drum tab, this is a
selection drum transcription, drum sheet music chart, or drum score for
Straight Ahead by Kenny Dorham.
