Italian rock band Maneskin rose to global fame in 2021 when they won the Eurovision Song Contest; however, they were rockin' out on the streets of Italy since their formation in 2016.They are probably best known for their cover of the Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons tune "Beggin'", which they performed during an appearance on the Italian X-Factor show. And whilst that song has some ultra-tasty drumming from drummer Ethan Tochio, it's this song - 'I Wanna Be Your Slave' which truly highlight's his ability to crank out the funk-tinged rock beats.Of particular note in this performance is Torchio's feel-shifting use of time and half-time. This is the skill of changing the feel of a song by playing a beat at half the speed of the previous pattern in the song. This enables the song to sound like it's gone 'slow' whilst still in the same time signature. In metal and EDM circles it's known as the 'drop'.Another great feature of this song is Torchio's use of open/closed hihat, combined with other elements of the kit to produce big accents. Additionally, there are moments when Ethan continues this syncopated hihat, but pairs it with a straight dance beat underneath. this juxtaposition of ideas is difficult at first but very fun and effective when mastered.This transcription would be great for anyone who hasn't done much open/closed hihat integration, as well as the drummer who wants to play a syncopation off against a straight rhythm. Lots of fun indeed!
