Following his bad boy antics on American TV which led to widespread acceptance of his 1977 debut album 'My Aim Is True', Englishman Elvis Costello formed his backing band The Attractions and in 1978 released his followup record 'This Year's Model'.
'Pump It Up' was one of two singles from this recording, and despite having become popular the world over in the decades since its release, at the time it only charted low in the top 50 in Australia and England.
The song defintiely has a punk vibe to it with drummer Pete Thomas laying down a quarter note tom-driven beat, interspersed with an eighth note double time chorus beat featuring snares playing on the downbeat as well as the backbeat.
Whilst this song seems relatively simple with really only two beats to it's name, there are subtle differences within each beat peppered throughout the song. This makes an accurate performance of the drum part a much more involved study than expected.
This song is for the drummer who hasn't played a hihat foot pulse previously and wants to give it a crack. it's also just a fun song to bash out with your mates or to a backing track.
