Candian four-piece Magic! released 'Rude' in 2013 as the lead single for their 2014 release 'Don't Kill the Magic!'
Magic! describe themselves as Reggae Fusion, and that is very indicative on this release. Drummer Alex Tanas has a good grip on a reggae rocker beat in the verse. Additionally, the track features what sounds like some iconic sampled reggae fills. I have included these in the chart for you to learn and play.
The pre-chorus features a double time side stick pattern on both the downbeat and backbeat, and then spills back into the half-time feel of the single-handed sixteenth rocker beat made famous by iconic Jamaican drummers Sly Dunbar ('Sponji Reggae' by Black Uhuru) and Carlton Dunbar ('Could You Be Loved' by Bob Marley and the Wailers).
Then, the post-chorus features a nice accented syncopation played between hihat, snare and kick. Tight and snappy.
This is a great song for those who haven't explored any reggae yet, and it's also a great study into accenting with open/closed hihat.
